GBWR League GBWR Elite GBWR Development Contact GBWR

How the game is played

The action takes place on a standard basketball court using a volleyball. Players sit in rugged lightweight aluminium wheelchairs.

The object of the game is to score by carrying the ball over your opponent’s goal line. Most chair-to-chair contact is allowed, but not body contact. Much of the activity takes place off the ball as players use their chairs to “takeout” opposition and allow the ball carrier to cross their opponent’s goal line and score a try.

Players are classified according to their arm and hand function and strength from 0.5 points (the less able) to 3.5 points (the more able). Four players are allowed on court at any one time and the sum of their classification points must be 8 or less, meaning that strategic substitutions are an important tactical part of the game.

The game’s unique blend of the physicality of big hits and the strategy of tactical play has led to its adopted nickname, Chess with Violence!
