Development
In 2001, GB started a Development Squad to help new players get started in the sport and to develop the "players of the future" for GB. Since it's inception we have gone from strength to strength. In 2002 the Development Team embarked on a unique tour with an able bodied rugby team, the first ever combined able/disabled players.
the Development Unit is aiming to start new clubs at areas of the country in need of a team; helping people with upper limb disabilities enjoy and richer and fuller life through sport and fitness.
Who knows; like the 75% of original Development players they may just go on to be elite international and Paralympic athletes!
We rely on volunteers to help with the weekends; nurses for assistance and care, physiotherapists for injury management and wheelchair technicians.
Each weekend will consist of attracting new players and training them up to national game level, leading up to playing in an international tournament once each year. This gives players something to focus on and aspire to, whilst preparing them for the fast paced, exhilarating and social game that is wheelchair rugby!
